Every year CHI brings thousands of university students from all over the world to participate in the USA Work & Travel Program.
They have the unique chance to meet with a new culture, to experience the work atmosphere and share their summer break with new American and other foreign friends.

Self Placement:
You can choose the Self placed option and arrange your own employment in the US. This option gives you freedom to choose the location and type of job you wish to have during your USA Work & Travel Program. You will also be responsible for all the arrangements with the employer.

If you decide to find your own job, a written job offer must be submitted to CHI with your full application when applying for the USA Work & Travel Program.
Job Assistance:
With an additional fee you can receive job assistance from CHI. If you choose this option, CHI will provide a job for you and will assist you with the selection of employment. CHI will also provide all the necessary documentation about the employment and will assist with all the arrangements.
If you are interested in the USA Work & Travel Program and you wish to apply or get more information, please contact one of our partners in your home country. CHI works side by side with all the partners to provide quality service and support for all participants.
If CHI does not have a partner in your home country, you may contact the Work and Travel Department directly and we will assist you.

SEVIS Validation
The Department of State requires that CHI know where their students are in the United States at all times. Due to this fact, CHI developed their own web site, www.sevis.org, to be able to monitor and report all their participants as required by the Department of State.
You MUST validate your visa to be able to work legally in the U.S. You are responsible for validation of your visa after arrival to the U.S. You are required to report to your sponsoring agency (CHI) within 3 days after your arrival. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in automatic cancellation of your J-1 visa after 30 days from the start date on your DS-2019 form. If your visa is not validated on time, you may have problems obtaining a Social Security Number.
CHI, as your program sponsor, designed a web site to keep track of all the USA Work & Travel participants. Please see more details: www.sevis.org.
Once your visa has been properly validated in SEVIS, you can apply for a Social Security number at the nearest Social Security office.
Social Security
During your USA Work & Travel Program you MUST secure a Social Security number in order to work legally in the United States. You may apply for a Social Security card at the Social Security office nearest to your place of employment, upon arrival in the United States. You can locate the nearest Social Security office by looking on the Social Security Administration's web site at www.ssa.gov/locator/
In order to apply for your Social Security number you must be validated in the SEVIS system.
It will take approximately 15 business days to receive a Social Security number and 40-60 days for the card. Some employers require one or both to work. This means that it is possible that you will not be working the first 2 weeks if the employer requires a Social Security number.
For more information about Social Security see your Student Handbook (p.10) or contact the USA Work & Travel Department.

In case you need to use your medical travel and accident insurance, you should contact the US office of the Company within 48 hours at: +1 305 698 7757. If you fail to do so, you will not be reimbursed for the medical costs.
