Is ‘travel more’ on your to-do list? Is the cost of a prospective trip holding you back? Good news – traveling doesn’t have to be expensive! Here are 10 ways to save money while traveling.
1. Be flexible
This is the best way to save money on flights. Wait until you see a great deal and grab it. Most airlines will have a calendar that will show you the cheapest days to fly. Take advantage of this! Booking an early morning or evening flight can also save you a lot of money.
2. Go offseason
When you travel offseason things will be less expensive. Flights, hotels and sightseeing attractions will all be discounted.
3. Look for city cards
You can often find city cards where you will get into multiple attractions for a discounted price. At times you can even avoid waiting in line which can save you a lot of time.
4. Book a room with a refrigerator
Eating out can be very expensive. If your room has a refrigerator or microwave you can avoid eating out every meal.
5. Stay outside the city
Most cities have great public transportation. To save a little money book a hotel that is a little outside the city but close to public transportation.
6. Don’t eat in areas that are close to tourist destinations
Local restaurants are usually going to be quite a bit cheaper than those in tourist spots. For example, try not to eat at a restaurant in Times Square in New York City unless you want to pay a lot more than you would at a restaurant just a few blocks away.
7. Bring some food and drinks with you
Purchase food when you arrive and on long sightseeing days, pack a lunch and snacks to enjoy during the day. You’ll be able to see more if you aren’t stopping to eat as often and you will also save a lot of money.
8. Find free attractions
Do some research before you travel and look for free activities in the area. There are great parks you can visit as well as walking tours that are often free. You can see a lot without spending any money.
9. Use a credit card that doesn’t charge you for international expenses
Those pesky international fees can add up when you are using your credit card in a foreign country. If you travel a lot invest in a credit card that doesn’t have any fees.
10. Avoid checking bags
Most airlines charge to check bags. If you pack light you can carry your bag on the plane and put it in the overhead bin. You will save money and time by only packing the essentials.
