Nadia Myburgh, from South Africa, is currently an au pair living in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Rather than spend her free time shopping or eating out, Nadia decided to volunteer. Naida is a qualified Animal Health Technician so she volunteers at a veterinarian office at least three days a week. She likes that it keeps her brain active and she can continue to learn new techniques.
When asked why she volunteers, Nadia says, “Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people’s lives, including your own. It gives you the satisfaction of playing a role in someone else’s life, helping people who may not be able to help themselves. Volunteering is a way of giving back to your community while developing important social skills, and gaining valuable work experience all at the same time. I have been volunteering for a very long time I have been at this veterinarian practice for over a year now and It feels like home. I must say from playing with puppies to saying goodbye to lifeline friends with clients, to cleaning up a mess and washing instruments, everything is part of the experience and I would not change it for anything!”
Nadia encourages all of her fellow au pairs and exchange students to get out there and volunteer. You will make new friends and really feel like part of the community.
