AYP student Daniel Katayama from Brazil is impressing everyone in Oregon with his baseball skills. Below is an excerpt from Southern Oregon’s Mail Tribune Newspaper about Daniel.
Expectations are high for several first-year Mustangs, including Brazilian foreign exchange student Dan Katayama, who was a hit for Phoenix this past school year and is already off on a tear for his new team. Katayama hit three home runs and was 6-for-10 with four runs and six RBIs in a pair of wins Sunday, and had three hits and two runs in a game Saturday.
Katayama had played third base for his junior national team back home but moved to second base for Phoenix in the spring and appears destined for that spot again with the Mustangs thanks to his sure-handed abilities. It was his hope to catch on with the Mustangs this summer in order to gain college scholarship opportunities here in the United States.
“He’s going to have the opportunity for people to watch him play and anything’s possible,” said Kensinger, who is admittedly already a big fan of the fun-loving infielder. “He’s already on the radar. He just stands out because he’s so selective and when he takes a hack, man, he hit a couple bombs over the weekend.”
