Boston Volunteer Experience

Evelyn Loh, from China, recently spent four weeks living and volunteering in Boston as part of CHI’s Short Term Enrichment Program (STEP).  Below is Evelyn’s story of coming to the U.S. for the first time, experiencing an American business, living with a host family and having to say goodbye to a city she fell in love with.

“I arrived in Boston on a really hot day after a long flight from China to America. That was my first time to visit another country by myself, and I had no idea what was waiting for me. However, now, I can’t express how I love the days and cherish the memories in Boston during this wonderful summer.

Boston is a peaceful and historic city in America. I’m lucky to start my CHI program in this beautiful place, and I went to lots of famous spots during my free time.  I had good times with local people that brought beautiful thoughts to my eyes and heart.

My sponsor from CHI, Alex, was my first friend in Boston.  She was so amiable and thoughtful that contacted me often to find out the details of my schedule and life in America, that made me feel really comfortable and thankful.

I was a volunteer at Tony Williams Dancing Center for four weeks and had a wonderful time with everyone.  They were all friendly with me and made me feel part of the team. I tried my best to give assistance daily to the dance center and this experience was beneficial to my ability of practice as well.

I lived with my host father Petr and his two wonderful kids Milla and Lukas. Petr was humorous and a cool dad. We would watch TV together, talk about hobbies, and laugh aloud about funny experiences. I didn’t expect that I could have such a great host family who was so easy to get along with, I had an unforgettable time with them and appreciate everything.

Time flew by. I wish I could have more time to live with my dear host family, volunteer for Tony’s and talk about life and dreams with my friends. After my program, I went to LA for holiday with my Chinese friend.  I enjoyed LA but actually Boston rocked my summer. I will keep all of the memories in my heart, and hope one day that I will go back to Boston!”
