Extraordinary High School Exchange Student from Spain

We will soon say goodbye to our 2014-2015 CHI high school exchange students. Before we do, we want to spotlight one extraordinary young lady Maria Hernandez Castro, from Spain.  Maria is living in Hanahan, SC with the Futch family who will host again next year.

Each month we reach out to our participants and host families to find out how things are going. This month we found out Maria has been very busy making the most of every moment she has left before returning home.

Maria recently had the privilege of singing the American national anthem with her high school chorus at a Charleston Battery soccer game. She also celebrated her birthday this month.  Maria was treated to a fancy dinner with her host family.  Her Host Dad presented her with a gift from the family….a pearl necklace, to symbolize how rare and precious she is to them.

Maria is finishing strong in school.  She was even received special recognition at the end of year sports banquet for her outstanding sportsmanship and dedication to the school. Maria also got to be a part of the Groundbreaking Ceremony of Palmetto Scholars Academy’s new school facility. Overall, Maria is doing great and doesn’t want to talk about leaving!
