German Exchange Student – The Beginning

German Exchange Student - The Beginning 1
CHI high school exchange student Hannah Gronewold, from Germany, shared with us the first seven weeks of her homestay experience.  Hannah is living with a host family in Forest, VA and attending a public high school.

“It has been seven weeks and a few days since I finally arrived in the United States of America.  I arrived at the airport here in Roanoke, VA, and saw my host family for the very first time. Right now I can just say that I really love them! They have been so good to me in my first weeks here and I really enjoyed myself the past weeks. I just hope they did too!

I’ve experienced a lot since I got here. I’ve tried so many new things. I’ve seen so many new things! I’ve been to my first football games, tailgates, volleyball games, club meetings, theatre auditions and a whole lot more. I’ve tried so many different kinds of food and I’ve already learned so much…

To be completely honest with you: It’s hard so describe what I’ve been experiencing the past weeks, because it’s something so different, special and unique – you can probably imagine. I met so many new and wonderful people and I’m really happy about that. After seven weeks I already can call some people my friends and even my family, isn’t that crazy? I’d say that I’m especially close with my host mom and my host sister. It really feels like they’re my family, which could sound crazy since they actually aren’t. But still: they make me feel at home. I’m still trying to get close to my host brother though, but we’ll get there too!

I’m really thankful for having them as my host family and I think you guys at CHI really did a good job here. They’re always saying that I’m fitting in with their family perfectly and yeah, I do think so too!

School here is also great, but definitely different. I really love my schedule here, because I got to choose a lot of fun classes! The only things that I like better about the school system back home is, that we don’t have the same classes every day!

I’m really involved in theatre at my school! I got a part in this seasons musical, which is going to be Hairspray! I’m so excited for the play and I can’t wait for the performances!

I’m also participating in five clubs right now: Thespian (Theatre) Club, Red Cross Club, Spanish Club, Bible Club and FCA. Actually I really wanted to do Sideline Football Cheerleading, but since I wasn’t here for try-outs I couldn’t do that… But next season I want to try out for Basketball Cheer! I hope I make it into the team, because even though I’m already involved right now I want to do even more!”
