Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for ‘Fifth of May’, is an annual holiday popular in the United States and Mexico.
A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day, however, this holiday began as a way for Mexican-American communities to support the cause of freedom during the American Civil War. Mexican Independence Day actually falls on September 16th.
Today, Cinco de Mayo is simply a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and there are many ways to celebrate. The easiest way is to enjoy some tasty Mexican food. Either go out to a restaurant or try making chiles rellenos or tamales. How about trying your hand at making homemade tortilla chips and salsa?
