Male Au Pair Reflects on Completed Program

Male Au Pair participant Matthew Tomlin, from the United Kingdom, recently completed two years as an au pair in New York.  During his time in the U.S. Matthew was very open about his time as an au pair.  He shared both successes and some hard times that he experienced during the program.  Now that his program is finished, Matthew shares one final look at what it has meant to him to live in the United States as an au pair.
“So, it’s now completely done: I am no longer an Au Pair. I left yesterday, and it’s still not sinking in properly. I still can’t quite believe I’ve spent two years in America. I’ve learned so much about myself and met so many incredible people that it’d be impossible to list them all. My host family have been my real family for two years, and I know they will continue to be a part of my life for many years to come: I owe them so much. I poured so much of my heart and soul into looking after Christian, who is hands down the most amazing little boy I have ever had the good grace to know, let alone care for, and leaving him and his family was not easy. I’ve unknowingly turned a huge corner in my life, and although I know I’ve got a lot of exciting times ahead of me, I’ll never forget and always be thankful that I had this opportunity. Thank you to all my friends and family -both at home and in the US-, for supporting me for the last two years, because I am nothing without all of your encouraging words and gestures. I’ll continue to make you all proud”  Matthew Tomlin
