Welcoming a German au pair to your home is a wonderful way to introduce your children to the rich tapestry of German culture. Our German au pairs are highly educated and have outstanding English language skills. Families who have had one of our German au pairs are usually impressed by their maturity for their age, disciplined yet independent nature, and adaptability to American life.
In addition, most of our German au pairs come with a great deal of real life childcare experience. The childcare hours on their profiles usually don’t tell the whole story. Having grown up in a similar Western, cosmopolitan culture as the United States, our German au pairs can usually relate extremely well to their American counterparts, able to serve as both mentors and friends to their host kids.
Our German au pairs often enjoy engaging children in educational activities and sports. In addition, they are usually strong drivers because the process to obtain a permit in Germany is notably difficult. It requires many hours of practice on a variety of roads. This means that even au pairs who have not had their licenses very long already have a good deal of road experience, which helps them quickly feel confident driving in the U.S.
CHI’s own Chris Burbach, CHI Au Pair USA’s Regional Coordinator, has first-hand experience with German au pairs – her family has had the pleasure of hosting two. Both young women were only 18 when they arrived, but both also displayed a great deal of maturity. They were responsible, energetic and great additions to the family. They were also both capable drivers, and quickly adjusted to American culture.
Chris’s relationship with both women has lasted much longer than the duration of their programs. More than a decade after their initial time together, they all still keep in touch. In fact, Chris’s daughter Chole was in one of their past au pairs’ weddings a couple of years ago, a very special moment for the whole family. Chris is thrilled that what started as a temporary childcare solution has turned into a lifelong friendship. She can’t recommend German au pairs enough!
