This summer, CHI invited its USA Work & Travel participants to take part in a contest to help show off their program spirit. Participants were asked to submit an essay, video or photo slideshow that best demonstrated their personal ‘American Experience’. In their own words and images, here is what this year’s CHI USA Work & Travel alumni have experienced during their summer in America.
Essay by Cristina Popescu, Romania, worked in Ocean City, MD
My name is Cristina Popescu, I’m from Romania and I study General Medicine in Bucharest.
Before I entered the University I read a book about one famous neurosurgeon who worked at John Hopkins University. This book encouraged me to attend the medical University.
When I enterd the University I would hear all the time about this great hospital, John Hopkins, and when I’ve heard that they are building a new hospital for children, I attended the facebook group to be in touch with them and to be updated to the news.
When I came to Ocean City, one of my friends asked me if I want to visit the John Hopkins Hospital. I’ve answered : “Are you kidding? I was dreaming about this for 5 years!!!! ” So she arranged for me to spend 2 hours in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unite and hang out with a doctor. First, I had a tour of the hospital and I was amased of the equipment and everything that was there!! The children receive a drawing book were there is explained on their own language everything that will happen in the hospital. But the great part was coming: I was introduced to the doctor and she was romanian!!!!! I was speechless about how God arranged this beautifull day for me. She actually studied in the same University as I do. I found out many interesting things about the medical system in USA, about treatments for neurological disease… it was more than I’ve expected.
Then, to finish this amasing day, my friend took me to visit Annapolis, the capital of Maryland. It’s a beautifull city!
This was the best day of my summer and I’m really happy that I came here , in Ocean City!!!
