CHI partners with amazing companies each year through our Work & Travel program, helping to fill seasonal and temporary job openings with qualified English-speaking J-1 exchange students for up to four months. One of those amazing companies we are thrilled to have a successful history with is the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. Southwestern Regional Manager Scott Perry has been wonderful to work with and recently shared some thoughts on why the Work & Travel program works well for Ghirardelli.
“CHI has been a tremendous program for the stores in my region. This program has really helped us fill in some seasonal employment gaps with fun, hardworking staff members that have really enjoyed their time in Southern California. It has been great to see the development of our J-1 workers in regards to language, culture and work ethic here in the United States. They also had the chance to do fun events and travel with CHI. We have certainly built some strong relationships with these workers and we are looking forward to inviting many of them back next year. We really appreciate all the time and effort CHI puts forward to help us find great candidates for employment in our stores.”
Scott took a moment to highlight two specific participants, Luka and Nikola, from their Hollywood and San Diego shops, respectively. Both had great energy, leadership skills and big personalities. Luka was a natural leader, and was excellent at communicating the needs and challenges of his group, while Nikola greeted thousands of guests with a big friendly smile.
We reached out to Luka, from Serbia, and his highlights from the program were “making amazing friends, visiting San Francisco and running into talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.” Although he knows we cannot guarantee celebrity sightings, he hopes to return next summer.

For participants, the program offers the chance to intimately experience work, life and culture in the US during their school break. CHI sponsors all participants and helps secure their J-1 visas, enabling them to legally work in the US for up to four months. During the program, these university students develop their professional and communication skills, English proficiency and teamwork experience.
