Hiking is a fun and affordable activity that is good for the body and mind. Go with friends, explore and see something new. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, here are some tips and tricks to help you on your next hike.
Finding your next great hike
Your phone is one of your best resources when locating a place to hike. Hiking apps allow you to search some of the most popular hiking trails and sort by difficulty. Once you have selected a hike, your app will help you find your way and keep track of how far you have traveled. The offline maps can also be really helpful if you lose cellular service. One of the most popular hiking apps currently available is Gaia (Greek for Mother Nature).

What to bring
Bring a small backpack with you when you go for a hike. Pack extra clothes, a first aid kit, and most importantly food and water. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are also important on warmer days. Foods that are especially good for hiking are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, trail mix, protein bars, beef jerky, and dried fruit. Stay hydrated and energized while on your hike!
Safety tips
- Get an early start so you can finish your hike before it gets too hot out
- Don’t eat berries you find along the trail – they may be poisonous and even if they aren’t the local wildlife may need them to survive
- Know your ability and don’t take on a hike that is too difficult for you
- If you are new to hiking don’t wander off alone but try to hike with friends
- Learn about poisonous plants that you may come across on your hike and find out how to avoid them
