Russian culture has a rich history, strong traditions and influential arts, especially when it comes to literature, philosophy, classical music, ballet, architecture, painting, cinema and animation. Whether you have Russian ancestry, are learning the language or just can’t get your fill of borscht, CHI would love to send you on the adventure of a lifetime to visit Russia.

World Explorers creates a safe and fun environment for you to teach English in Russia. CHI provides you with basic tutoring materials for casual English conversation lessons. Most Russians learn English in school and are eager for the opportunity to practice. That’s where you come in. You will be welcomed into your host family’s home and become a part of their lives, and they will become your friends for life. Food is a major part of Russian culture, and mealtimes prove to be a great time for getting the whole family to engage English conversation.

Your number one priority is to spend quality time with your Russian hosts and to practice English with them for 15 hours per week. Your goal will be to help your hosts gain confidence speaking English. Ideally you will also want to practice speaking Russian with your hosts in return.

CHI works with a trusted overseas partner agency in Voronezh, Russia. This is where most of our placements are located. Voronezh has a population of one million inhabitants and is about 300 miles from Moscow. There are many students attending university in the area, so there are a lot of fun events happening around town. Our partners will welcome you to their office to meet some of their staff and to get you acquainted with the area. Their agency is connected to an English language academy where you may be given the opportunity to teach in a classroom setting in addition to your World Explorers home tutor position. This is really exciting for those who are studying education and need some experience to add to their resume. Please note that some of our host families also live in smaller towns throughout Russia. We will do our best to satisfy your needs when searching for the best match. We ask that you please be flexible with your exact location. It really depends on which families we have available during the time you are looking to travel. Placements may be a bit outside of major city centers like Moscow or St. Petersburg. If you need a specific location, you may wish to consider our Guaranteed Placement Location option. With our Guaranteed Placement Location option you are able to choose the specific city where you would like to be placed. You can choose from any location with a population of over 500,000. This process requires two additional weeks to arrange your host family and costs an additional $150.
World Explorers is an ideal way for you to improve your Russian language skills. Cultural immersion forces you to put yourself out there and try communicating with the locals. You will be surprised at how quickly you can pick up new grammar, use the correct verb tenses and improve your accent when you are surrounded by native Russian speakers.
World Explores is an independent travel program. You need to be a self-starter to make sure you find things to do in your free time while your host parents are at work and your host brothers and sisters are at school. You will have a local coordinator that can give you advice about things to do, but you are ultimately responsible for keeping yourself busy. We can give you ideas about how to make friends and get involved with the local community in Russia.
Yes! You are welcome to do some traveling before, during our after your homestay program in Russia. Moscow is the political, economic, cultural, and scientific center of Russia and is the largest city on the European continent. When you walk through the streets of Moscow, you will feel like you are traveling through time. Architectural styles from different eras await you at every turn. The main attractions and the most interesting places in the historic city center are within walking distance. If you don’t want to walk by foot take the city bus, river bus or even a boat tour around Moscow to see famous sites including the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Bolshoi Theater, Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, The Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Old Arbat walking street and much more. St. Petersburg is another major tourist destination in Russia and home to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. You’ve surely seen pictures of this elaborate church adorned with colorful domes. St. Petersburg offers plenty of art, nightlife, dining and cultural destinations that are definitely worth a visit.
Our placements are always in safe areas away from political conflict. Our partner agency will make sure that you have a 24-hour in-country support system throughout your stay in Russia.
In the summer months, Russia has a wonderful climate and lots of sunshine. There are beautiful beaches and a gorgeous countryside to explore. Some of the overseas partner agencies we work with place restrictions on age. We recommend this destination for travelers ages 18-60+. Some older candidates may be considered, but we cannot guarantee it.
